About four years ago my father took my son to a tractor show while visting my parents in Michigan. My son Bailey came home with an English hen. He had bought it with his own money, I think he paid $6.00 for it. He was devasted when I had to tell him he could not bring it home with him. So Shelby the English hen moved in with my cousin. He was twelve years old then. Must be something about the age, my daughters are now twelve.
That started a facination with chickens for my daughter Sophia. She has been asking me for a baby chick for a few years now. It really got bad after my friend Heather had come over to photograph my house for Souvenir. She brought fresh eggs, showed the girls photos of her chickens and gave them a few pointers about chickens.
I personally do not have a facination with chickens. But luckily I have a very easy going mother who has a huge yard. And will do just about anything for her girls. So meet Buckie, Bubbles and Hermie my Mothers new chicks. These photos were taken when we first bought them. I am sure they are almost covered in feathers by now. This was taken a couple of weeks ago while we were visiting in Michigan.
Luckily my hubby came out to visit for a week. He quickly built the little ones an awesome little coupe with the help of my son, recycling some vintage barn wood. The funny thing is that I had bought a latch at an antique shop and gave it to them to use. Little did I know that it was in the shape of a chicken. It was just perfect for it.

I have three hens and have had them for years...I live in Huntington Beach and they are wonderful pets, egg-providers and just fun to watch and they keep me great company when I am in the Garden. Having them has made me such an advocate for free-range chickens.
